Arbury Fine Arts

About Arbury Fine Arts

Arbury Fine Arts is named in recognition of Ned and Dorothy (Honey) Arbury. Honey Arbury served on the founding Board of Control for Saginaw Valley College. The building was privately funded, and through the efforts of the Arburys, the vision of a fine arts building on campus was achieved.

A central feature of the building is the Marshall M. Frederick Sculpture Gallery, later renamed the Marshall M. Frederick Museum in 1999.

Mr. Frederick’s artwork and studio were gifted to the University upon his death. In 2003, an addition was constructed to house archives and a simulation of his Woodward Avenue studio. A four-classroom addition completed in 2009 provided additional classroom and studio space.

Bachand Hall

About Bachand Hall

Construction of the State of Michigan-funded Health & Human Services building brought kinesiology, occupational therapy, social work, and the Crystal M. Lange College of Nursing together in one location, creating a shared home for programs in health and human services.

The building, first opened in 2010, was the second major educational facility constructed north of College Drive and the second LEED-certified building on campus. It was designed by TMP Associates and constructed by Spence Brothers.

In October 2022, the facility was formally renamed Bachand Hall in honor of SVSU’s fourth president, Dr. Donald J. Bachand, recognizing his more than four decades of service to the university, including more than eight years as president, and his lasting impact on student success, academic growth, and community engagement.

Brown Hall

About Brown Hall

Brown Hall, along with Zahnow Library and Science West, was constructed in 1986 as part of the second state-funded building project, Instructional Facility #2 (IF-2). IF-2 connects Wickes Hall to the north and Pioneer Hall to the south.

The building is named in recognition of Maurice E. Brown, who served on the original Saginaw Valley College Board of Control from 1963 until 1972.

Doan Center

About Doan Center

Doan Center has served as the campus dining center since 1970 when it replaced the original cafeteria located in the “68” building. The building is named after Midland resident and original SVSU Board of Control member Leland I. Doan.

A 1975 expansion added much needed student activity space.

A major kitchen and dining room addition was completed in 1994 in anticipation of the opening of West Complex and its banquet and conferencing facilities.

The dining area was internally renovated in 2005 and rebranded as Real Food on Campus (RFOC). The current Marketplace concept was a result of a 2011 renovation.

Eric R. Gilbertson Hall

About Eric R. Gilbertson Hall

Eric R. Gilbertson Hall is named in recognition of SVSU’s third and longest-serving president. During his tenure, student enrollment grew by 85 percent, the physical campus tripled in size, and endowments increased more than twenty-fold to exceed $70 million.

The centerpiece of this expansion was the Regional Education Center, the first educational building constructed north of College Drive. In 2010 it was connected to the Health and Human Services building, and it was renamed Gilbertson Hall in fall 2014. The building is home to the College of Education and Ott Auditorium.

About First Year Suites

The First Year Suites are made up of the two oldest student housing buildings on campus.

Great Lakes Hall was part of the 1969 construction boom designed by Alden B. Dow Associates, Inc. Tranquil Hall was constructed in 1971 and is a near-exact, though smaller, version of Great Lakes Hall.

About Founders Hall

Privately funded and constructed in 1995, Founders Hall features exposed wood, chapel-like construction and seats up to 125 people in the main auditorium.

Living Centers

About Living Centers

The three Living Centers were constructed in four parts between 1999 and 2009.

These three-story apartments include a variety of living arrangements, including two-, three-, four-, and five-bedroom apartments, as well as efficiency apartments. Each building includes floor-by-floor central laundry, community space, and study areas. Living Center South and Living Center Southwest share outdoor basketball and volleyball courts.

Ryder Center is named in recognition of SVSU’s second president, Jack Ryder.

Science East

About Science East

Science East was constructed in 2001 as part of the state-funded Instructional Facility #3 (IF-3) project, which also included a major renovation of Science West.

Upon completion in 2001, Science East and the renovated Science West building were dedicated as the Herbert Dow Doan Science Complex in recognition of longtime University supporter Herbert D. “Ted” Doan. Science East currently houses the Chemistry and Computer Science departments.

About

Science West is part of the Herbert Dow Doan Science Building, named in recognition of longtime University supporter Herbert D. “Ted” Doan. The 2013 greenhouse expansion is named in recognition of Arnold and Gertrude Boutell.

Science West was originally constructed in 1986 as part of the second state-funded building project, Instructional Facility #2 (IF-2), which also includes Zahnow Library and Brown Hall. Upon completion, IF-2 linked Wickes Hall to Pioneer Hall. Science West currently houses the biology and physics departments.

South Campus Complex A

About South Campus Complex A

South Campus Complex A consists of an original 1985 building and a 1992 addition. It was constructed as a fast-track project in summer 1985 to house campus administrative offices after the Wickes Annex portable buildings were destroyed by fire earlier that spring.

The building has had several names over time, including Administrative Services South, the CIESIN building, and the College of Education. It was renamed SCC-A in 2004. It currently houses campus facilities, campus police, business services, and the controller’s office.

Student Center

About Student Center

The Student Center was built in response to a quickly expanding on-campus student population associated with the increased availability of on-campus housing.

It is home to student government, student organizations, Residential Life, and the Richard Thompson Student Activities Center. First opened in 2003, it was designed by Wigen-Tincknell-Meyer Associates and constructed by Wolgast Corporation.

University Village

About University Village

University Village was constructed in four phases beginning in 2000 and ending in 2007.

Phase I included a separate laundry building and two buildings with single-occupancy apartments. Phase II included a community room addition to the laundry building as well as outdoor basketball and volleyball courts. Phase III, referred to as Village East, and Phase IV, referred to as Village West, each feature a central laundry. The typical townhouse-style unit includes a kitchen, bathroom, and living area on the first floor, with four bedrooms and a bathroom on the second floor.

West Complex

About West Complex

The fourth state-funded project on campus, the Business and Professional Development Center (West Complex), was constructed in 1996. West Complex connected Doan Center on the south to Arbury Fine Arts on the north and completed the formation of the main campus courtyard. A 2011 addition facilitated the move of the bookstore onto the first floor.

West Complex consists of Curtiss Hall, which houses the College of Business and is named in recognition of former board member Charles B. Curtiss; Groening Commons, named in recognition of William A. Groening; and the Performing Arts Center, which is home to Rhea H. Miller Recital Hall and the Malcolm Field Theatre for the Performing Arts.

Wickes Hall

About Wickes Hall

Wickes Hall was constructed in 1969 and is named in honor of H. Randall Wickes. It was the first state-funded project on campus and was known as Instructional Facility #1 (IF-1).

Architectural firms from each of the Tri-Cities participated on the design team: Alden B. Dow Associates from Midland, Brysselbout-Starke-Hacker & Simon from Bay City, and Wigen-Tincknell from Saginaw. Wickes Hall houses classrooms, administrative offices, Admissions, the Registrar, international programs, and Financial Services. It is also home to the Board of Control Room and Marble Lecture Hall, named in honor of SVSU’s first president, Sam Marble.

About Zahnow Library

Zahnow Library, along with Brown Hall and Science West, was constructed in 1986 as part of the second state-funded building project, Instructional Facility #2 (IF-2).

The library was named in recognition of former board member and longtime University supporter Melvin J. Zahnow. A fourth floor added in 2003 is home to the Roberta Allen Reading Room. A food court addition constructed in 2006 houses Einstein Bros. Bagels.

How does SVSU advertise for construction bids?

When using a general contractor project delivery - we post an approved bidders list in the project documents. You will be contacted by the general contractor.

When using a construction manager/constructor project delivery - an invitation to bid will come directly from the University or the University’s design professionals.

How do I get on SVSU's approved contractor list?

You must fill out the Request for Inclusion (129KB). You will receive a letter from the university when you have been approved.

How do I get on SVSU's approved architect, engineer, or construction manager's list?

We do not keep an approved list of professionals. We keep on file the names of all professionals who have shown an interest in working with the University. We use this list when selecting firms to submit qualifications for specific projects.
